More Than My Hair
“More Than My Hair” is an ongoing multimedia documentary project that dives into the under-recognized world of trichotillomania, a complex mental health disorder primarily affecting women.
This project sheds light on its impact within the cultural and social fabric of Lebanon, aiming to raise awareness and foster understanding.
Trichotillomania, a condition affecting 1 in 50 people globally, is characterized by the compulsive pulling of hair from the head, eyebrows, eyelashes, and body. It often leads to bald patches, isolation, shame, anxiety, and a feeling of being ostracized. Many sufferers are unaware of the condition, believing they are alone in their struggle.
Through a blend of documentary photography and video storytelling, the project will capture the intimate and often-misunderstood aspects of trichotillomania. It will explore the emotional, psychological, and societal challenges faced by affected women, particularly within the context of Middle Eastern communities where stigma and misconceptions prevail.
“More Than My Hair” goes beyond representation. It aspires to create empathy and understanding by humanizing the experiences of those living with trichotillomania. Drawing on my personal journey, the project will utilize various artistic mediums to convey the emotional depth, internal battles, and even hope experienced by individuals struggling with this condition.
